General:
Aquatic or semi-aquatic perennial rooting in mud; stems 3-15 cm long, leaf bases joined by small winged ridges.
Leaves:
All opposite, linear and single-nerved to broadly egg- or spoon-shaped and 3- to 5-nerved, 1 cm wide.
Flowers:
Inflorescence of tiny inconspicuous flowers borne with bracts, white; female flowers stalkless or short-stalked; styles sometimes reflexed.
Fruits:
Achene-like, 4, each 1-seeded, 1-1.5 mm long, conspicuously wing-margined all around, minutely pitted.

Habitat / Range

Slow-moving streams and ponds in the lowland, steppe and montane zones; infrequent in S BC, locally frequent in WC BC (Skeena River estuary); introduced from Europe.
